The musical genre that best represent the Cuban idiosyncrasy and culture is Son. The piece known as "Son de la MaTeodora" played in Santiago de Cuba at the end of the 16th Century is the starting point of a large musical evolution of this genre in the eastern rural areas of the country that later will spread throughout the whole country.

Son adopts different ways of expression, according to the region of Cuba where it is played: Son Montuno, the most general, Changui, originally from Guantanamo and took by other eastern provinces and the Sucu sucu that identifies Isla de la Juventud. It is mixed with other Caribbean rhythms and is the base of salsa rhythm.
